Brig Suresh Thushara Cooray was born on 9th December 1970 in Kandy and completed his primary and secondary education at Kingswood College. He joined the Sri Lanka Army on 17th November 1991 through Kotalawala Defence University. After successful completion of his BA Degree in Defence Studies and basic military training he was posted to the Commando Regiment. During his unblemished 32 years of service he has done his best to the nation while participating in all major operations conducted by Sri Lanka Army to serve the motherland.

He has held many appointments in the Commando Regiment as a Team Commander, Adjutant, Group Commander, Commander Long Rang Patrol and Commanding Officer of 3rd and 4th Commando Regiments. Further, he has commanded 512 Infantry Brigade in Jaffna and 112 Infantry Brigade in Badulla.

As a staff officer he has served as a General Staff Officer 1 at 61 Infantry Division, Commando Regimental Headquarters, Directorate of Psychological operations, Directorate of Operations and as an Assistant Military Secretary - 2 at Military Secretary’s Branch at Army Headquarters apart from his present assignment.

As an instructor he has served as a Senior Instructor of Unit Command Course and Chief Instructor at Army War College Buttala.

As special assignments he has served as a Personal Security Officer (PSO) to former President Gotabhaya Rajapakse during his tenure as a Defence Secretary and former Commander of the Army General Daya Rathnayake.

Further, he has served as a Military Observer in United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo and as a Professional Staff Officer at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in United Nations Headquarters, New York in USA.

Brig Suresh Cooray has obtained his BA Degree in Defence Studies from KDU and he is a graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College and the National Dedence College in Sri Lanka. He has also attended number of military training courses and seminars locally as well as internationally in India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Kenya and USA.

Brig Suresh Cooray is a recipient of the gallantry medals of “Rana Wickrama Padakkama” and “Rana Sura Padakkama” on three occasions for his extra ordinary performances in the battlefield. Further, he has been awarded “Uththana Sewa Padakkama” for his unblemished military service.

Brig Cooray is married to Mrs Dilani Wickramasinghe and blessed with two sons. Presently he resides at Watapuluwa, Kandy.
