Senior Directing Staff (SL Navy)

Commodore GSD Weerasuriya was born on 12th January 1972 in Matara, Sri Lanka. Senior Officer joined the Sri Lanka Navy on 17th October 1993 and received his basic training as an Officer Cadet of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Rathmalana and Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee. He was commissioned on 17th October 1995 and awarded with a Bachelor of Science (Defence Studies) degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997. He is specialized in Hydrography and received a Masters’ degree in Hydrographic Sciences after completing Basic Hydrography (Category ‘B’) and Long Hydrography (Category ‘A’) courses during academic years of 2003/04 and 2008/09 at National Institute of Hydrography, Vasco da Gama, Goa, India.

Commodore GSD Weerasuriya successfully completed Staff Course at Naval Command and Staff College, Nanjin, China in 2010/11 and successfully completed Master of Public Administration degree programme at Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayawardanapura, Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015. Furthermore, he obtained a Master of Science degree in National Security and War Studies from National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad, Pakistan in 2022/23.

Senior Officer served as the Naval Officer in Charge, Hambantota [NOIC (HBT)] and Port Facility Security Officer (Hambantota International Port) [PFSO(HIP)] prior current appointment. Moreover, he successfully commanded different types of ships and crafts including Fast Attack Crafts (FACs), Fast Gun Boats (FGBs) and Landing Ship Tankers (LSTs) and land establishments. In addition, he acted as the Executive Officer of number of land establishments, ships and crafts and achieved a high degree of administrative capabilities. Above all, he was awarded with a Letter of Commendation by the Commander of the Navy for his outstanding performance against enemy out at sea in 2007.
