He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Management Sciences, and has a Master’s Degree in Management. In year 2010, has completed the Staff Course in Malaysia. He also has a Diploma in Defence and Stratrgic Studies from university of Malaya, and completed Programme on Terrorism and Security Studies in Germany.

He is completing 29 years by October 2023 of service, including over 10 years of sea service and along with over 04 years of sea command. In addition to that, he has held command at various bases. He has only held where only hand-picked officers are appointed, Commodore Sea Training, Deputy Director Naval Policy & Plan at Naval Headquarters, Captain Operations Department, Directing Staff at Staff College, Directing Staff at Naval and Maritime Academy, Training Captain, Senior Staff Officer Local Training, Senior Staff Officer Naval Examination and Curriculum, and presently he is appointed and Deputy Area Commander, Northern Naval Area, one of the most critical areas, with huge responsibilities and challenges.

During his naval career, he was actively involved in the naval operations during ‘Eelam War’ at sea and land, and has been awarded Rana Sura Padakkama gallantry medal, for his acts of valor and also awarded with Commander of Navy’s commendation for his outstanding performance. He is also a recipient of Utthama Seva medal for his unblemished service.

Commodore Nimal Ranasinghe is a keen squash player, and has represented Sri Lanka Navy in national level tournaments and obtained Sri Lanka Navy colours for squash. He is happily married to Mrs CT Neththasinghe and blessed with two very young daughters.
